Shaolin Temple & Yellow River, China at $764 RT

This region is so rich in history that it's been nicknamed "The Cradle of Chinese Civilization." And when a civilization is this old, you know that cradle must be jam-packed.

You'll be landing in Zhengzhou, which was the capital of China about 3,000 years ago and still bears the signs of royalty – the entire area is an archaeologist's dream. Admire the royal tombs and ancient palace ruins, then check out more at the Henan Museum (one of the best in all of China!)

Head outside of town, and you're in the Yellow River Valley Scenic Area. This beloved nature hub offers miles of trails, temples, massive stone statues, and views of that awe-inducing wall of water as it bursts from the Xiaolangdi Dam.

But perhaps the most exciting day trip from Zhengzhou brings you up into the mountains, to the Shaolin Temple. This 1,500-year-old monastery is a major Buddhist touchstone and the home of traditional Shaolin kung fu. While anyone can watch the experts and trainees show off their skills, the temple also offers lessons for visitors.

That's incredible news, because the most hardcore answer to "What did you do over break?" is "I received kung fu training from Shaolin monks at the same temple where the art was invented thousands of years ago." :-)
