Before the influencer crowds rush into Tokyo for those coveted cherry blossom pics, there's another tree blooming....
Japan's plum trees start to flower by early February (about 6-8 weeks before the cherries) and they're just as gorgeous. They range from white to Barbie pink, and unlike their more famous cousin, they have a super sweet, fruity, honey scent.
Plum blossom festivals run throughout the season, with vendors selling plum-flavored treats like cookies, jellies, and teas. Head to Hanegi Park for a festive snack and some cultural performances, or take a day trip out to Soga Plum Grove and grab some enviable shots of Mount Fuji peeking through the bubblegum-colored blossoms.
