Who needs a rocket to Mars when you've got a plane to Lanzarote?

Home to Timanfaya National Park, it's jagged sea of lava fields and frozen-in-time craters are just about as otherworldly as you can get...without switching planets, that is.

One of the best ways to see it is on the "ruta de los volcanes" bus loop, which goes inside areas that are usually off-limits to cars. 

Then, if you fancy stretching your legs, head just outside the park to Volcán de Cuervo, where you can actually wander inside a crater.

Travel tip: Arrive as early as possible to beat the crowds, and catch the landscapes bathed in a golden sunrise glow :-)
