Why visit Hanoi? One word: puppets.

Oh, you need more explanation? Alright, two words: water puppets.

This ancient aquatic art form developed in North Vietnam over a thousand years ago, starting out as entertainment for flooded villages in the Red River Delta. The rest of the world finally caught on in the '60s, but the premier water puppet show is still performed right here in Hanoi, at the Thang Long Theatre.

Here, master puppeteers stand behind a bamboo screen and use long rods to control the puppets, making them glide effortlessly over the water. It takes three years of training to handle these babies, with knowledge traditionally passed down from father to son for generations.
