Fortunately, you won't need a fur coat for this one — Split is a beachy city on the Adriatic, lined with palm trees and packed with ancient architecture. It's one of those places that you really have to meander around aimlessly in order to get the full effect. Slip through cobblestone alleyways criss-crossed with clotheslines, duck into cafés for fresh seafood, and lay out in the sun with the expert sun-soakers.

Wander around long enough, and soon you'll understand why a Roman emperor gave up the throne to retire here :-)
